BATON ROUGE — The LSU Campus Life Food Bank is honoring victims of the Sept. 11 attacks by packing 3,000 bags of food, one for each life lost that day.

Empty boxes line the wall in the student union on LSU's campus, where volunteers gathered to fill bags with items like water bottles, fruit cups and salty snacks.

The LSU food pantry received a $10,000 grant from 9/11 Day, supplemented by $5,000 from the Popeyes Foundation. The LSU Student Sustainability Fund also contributed to the effort.

"Six weeks ago we have planning and getting ready for it since then," Jennifer Christina, manager of LSU's Campus Life Food Bank, said.

Volunteers wore name tags of people lost on Sept. 11. 

Volunteer Reagan Milton reflected on what it meant to wear someone's name. "And they were just like, it's somebody who serves and I was just really grateful to have it on," Milton said. "Cause like they did a lot and I'm grateful to serve and I'm blessed to serve for them and have their name."

Students who had never volunteered before were welcomed in by simply walking in, signing up and starting to fill bags.

Volunteer Hatcher Garland said the day carried real meaning. "It's important to support the victims and support the fallen of that day for our country," Garland said. "Any way that we know how. This is a way that I can support my country and help those who were affected by 9/11 and I'm all for it."

As snacks on tables slowly disappeared into bags, a room full of volunteers continued working to remember the sacrifices made on Sept. 11.
