BATON ROUGE - For years, activists have called for improved sidewalks and lighting across the city-parish, and after a young couple was hit while walking on the shoulder of Nicholson Drive, that call came from the governor.

In the span of 24 hours, four lives were linked together by a tragedy that’s becoming familiar in Baton Rouge as three people were hit by cars and killed.

Sunday night, a father and his young son were both struck by a Honda Pilot while walking east along Blount Road. Family members said Brandon Square, 40, was killed and his 3-year-old son, Braylon, is still in the hospital.

Neighbors told WBRZ that speeding drivers become more dangerous along the stretch of road because there is little to no lighting there at night.

Not far from Tigerland, LSU student Leah Fonte and her fiancé Shane Hirstius died when a car struck them while walking along Nicholson Drive.

Monday afternoon, a judge set bond at $229,000 for college student Mia Dawson, who now faces numerous charges, including vehicular homicide and driving while inebriated.

Monday evening, Gov. Jeff Landry, DOTD, LSU and city-parish leaders announced they would discuss safety plans and infrastructure updates in that corridor. Sources say that meeting took place at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Baton Rouge community activist Patt Leduff says the lack of lighting and sidewalk space is an issue. LeDuff says hundreds of lights were installed along Scenic Highway last year, and now many have already burned out.

“It should be well lit, and it's not well lit,” LeDuff said. "I don't believe that we are really a walkable community."
