Sizzling high temperatures and summer steam will persist through the middle of the week. While “cooler” may be a stretch, a break in humidity is expected for the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend.

Tonight & Tomorrow: Sticky air will remain firmly locked in place across the Capital Area tonight. Low temperatures will gradually settle into the mid 70s under mostly clear skies.

On Tuesday, expect another scorching September afternoon. High temperatures will climb into the mid-90s after plenty of early sun. When you mix in the humidity, heat index values will soar into the 100s once again. That moisture will still support an isolated pop-up shower or thunderstorm as we achieve maximum warming during the afternoon hours.

Up Next: Partly sunny skies will continue on Wednesday; however, the atmosphere will start to warm and dry, so showers and thunderstorms will be spotty, if they can develop at all. The warmer atmosphere will certainly translate down to the surface, with high temperatures pegged for the mid 90s. Continued drying is expected on Thursday as a weak, backdoor cold front slides into the region, delivering noticeably less humid air.  

Most cold fronts sweep across Louisiana from the west or northwest. A backdoor front sneaks in from the northeast. It pulls in drier air originating from the Appalachian Mountains, sweeping away humid Gulf air without a major drop in daytime temperatures.

While daytime highs on Thursday and Friday will still reach the mid 90s, the drop in humidity will make a difference. The heat index, or feels-like temperature, will essentially be whatever the thermometer reads, unlike the very humid days early in the week that produced a heat index in the 100s. Just by lowering the humidity a little, our bodies will experience a feels-like reduction of 10-15 degrees. Overnight low temperatures will manage to reach the low 70s, and some upper 60s will even be possible north and east of Baton Rouge.

Enjoy the dry streak while it lasts, because moisture will gradually creep back over the weekend. Expect isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms to return as early as Saturday, with more coverage on Sunday.

The Tropics: The Caribbean and Gulf will remain quiet over the next 7 days. Out in the central Subtropical Atlantic, a disturbance located about 1,000 miles east-southeast of Bermuda has been producing disorganized showers. Conditions will become more favorable for gradual development mid-to-late week, and there is a forty percent chance a tropical depression could form as it moves slowly west-northwestward over the open Atlantic Ocean.
