GONZALES — Loved ones and law enforcement agencies from across the nation honored Iberville Parish Sheriff's Deputy Charles Riley at his funeral Monday in Gonzales.

Riley's funeral at the PACE Center on St. Anthony Avenue in Gonzales started with a public viewing from noon to 2:45 p.m. before a public service.

A 21-gun salute, taps and final call followed to honor Riley, a U.S. Navy veteran who served with the Iberville Sheriff's Office for six years.

Riley died in a shooting at the Iberville Parish courthouse in Plaquemine last week, a shooting that also left Deputy Brett Stassi Jr. hospitalized. The suspect in the shooting, 27-year-old Latrell Mikal Ornee Clark, was killed by a gunshot on Oct. 6.

"John 15:13 states greater love hath no man than this... that a man lay down his life for his friends. I think that embodies Chuck's actions on that fateful night," Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office Deputy Jordan Ward said in his remarks. "I will see to it that your family is taken care of. I'll attend the jiu-jitsu matches, birthday parties, and Christmas celebrations. I will be there on a random Tuesday when the plumbing leaks. I will carry on your legacy of bravery and honor."

Sheriff Brett Stassi, along with those who served with Riley, reflected on the mark he left upon those he knew.

"His actions saved lives, including my son Brett Stassi," Sheriff Stassi said.

"He was so much to so many. A loving husband, a devoted father, a proud and beautiful son, a beloved brother, and a hero," Iberville Sheriff's Office Major Monty Migliacio said.

Those who served with Riley remembered his kind heart and quick wit.

"In moments like this, it's easy to feel broken. Let us honor Charles by carrying forward the same dedication and integrity he lived by every single day," Iberville Sheriff's Office Captain Will Danielfield said.

Many in the department said Riley was more than a friend or partner, calling him 'a brother,' and promising to care for his family in his stead.

"I vow to never let you be forgotten, to always talk about you and tell our story to anyone I come across," Ward said.

Donations can be made to support Riley's family, including his wife and two daughters, here.
