BRUSLY - Brusly Police say multiple people could face charges in Saturday's golf cart crash involving two juveniles.

"Everybody involved is at fault," Capt. Keegan Allen, a Brusly Police Department detective, said on Monday. 

On Saturday, police said a silver Mercedes SUV tried to pass a golf cart on West St. Francis Road while the driver of the golf cart attempted to turn onto Elaine Street. Video of the incident shows the SUV hitting the golf cart—causing it to flip over and injuring two juveniles—before leaving the scene.

Brusly Police used materials left behind by the SUV at the scene along with cameras placed around town to track down the vehicle.

"A piece of the Mercedes that came off during the impact was actually found underneath the cart was able to help us figure out what kind of vehicle it was. We also used the crime cameras in the area," Allen said.

The driver of the vehicle, Adriel Smith of Prairieville faces hit-and-run and obstruction of justice charges.

Charges are currently pending against the owner of the golf cart, one of the juveniles' parents, who could face improper supervision of a minor, police say. Further, the juvenile driving the golf cart could also face a citation, according to authorities. 

"The juveniles were riding a golf cart that wasn't even supposed to on the roadway," Allen said. "The owner of that golf cart will be charged as well."

In general, state law prohibits golf carts on public roads and streets unless otherwise designated by the parish. For the instances where golf carts are allowed on public roads, the vehicle must meet certain safety requirements, experts at Ascension Golf Carts and Powersports said.

"Seatbelts, rear-view mirrors, side view mirrors. All the safety features you'd have in your car. Blinkers is another good one," Ascension Golf Carts Representative Caylee Petersen said.

But, there are additional requirements beyond safety measures to make a golf cart street legal.

"You want to make sure you're licensed, you have your VIN number, your insurance, all your safety requirements," Ascension Golf Carts Representative Angelina Lemoine said.

State law requires those operating golf carts to have a driver's license.

"It may be slower than a car, not look like a car, but it operates just the same and is just as dangerous," Peterson said.
