JACKSON - East Feliciana Public School system started the new year with a four-day school week for all students across its seven public schools.

Students will attend classes Tuesday through Friday, according to the district.

"We have longer school days so that way we're able to have longer instructional periods and we also have multiple intervention periods throughout the day to help kids get what they need academically," Jackson Elementary Principal Megan Phillips said.

Phillips said the change will help tackle truancy.

"It gives everyone the flexibility to make appointments or do the other things you would typically have to miss school for," Phillips said.

Campuses will not be fully closed on Mondays, with free programs and activities available. Breakfast and lunch will still be served on those days.
