LORANGER - Honey Coop Farms is a family farm where visitors can learn to bake sourdough bread from scratch and leave with a loaf they made themselves.

Owner Heather Cass started the bread-making classes after watching her husband bake and realizing others wanted to learn the same skill.

"I learned how to do it watching him," Cass said. "And that's when it kind of dawned on me I'm not the only one who wants to know how to do something like this but needs to be shown, so that's how the bread classes evolved."

The classes walk students through the entire process from beginning to end.

"So we offer private classes, we can do up to 10 loaves in our ovens, so max is about 10 people," Cass said. "And then we also open classes until they book."

One of the standout details about the bread is a key ingredient — honey goes into the sourdough, where it acts as a natural preservative and changes the fermentation time, giving the bread a tighter and softer crumb.

That honey comes straight from the farm itself. Honey Coop Farms currently has about 17 to 18 beehives, and visitors can schedule a closer look at the operation upon request.

The farm is home to more than just bees. Chickens, quail and sheep also live on the property, giving visitors plenty of hands-on time with the animals if booked ahead of time with notice.
